Shrimp Feed Management: Improving Feed Efficiency and Pond Performance
Feed is one of the largest operating costs in shrimp production. Better feed management can improve growth, reduce waste and help protect pond water quality.
Start with pellet quality
Pellets should be appropriate for shrimp size, remain stable long enough for feeding and be stored in dry, clean conditions. Damaged or stale feed can reduce intake and increase waste.
Adjust feeding to the pond
Use feeding trays, regular sampling and observations of shrimp activity to adjust the feeding rate. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, weather, molting and health status can all change appetite. Avoid relying on a fixed schedule without checking the animals and water.
Where additives fit
Attractants, probiotics, enzymes, vitamins and functional products may support specific farm goals. Evaluate them with a defined baseline and monitor feed conversion, survival, biomass gain and water parameters.
- Keep feed records by pond and batch.
- Review uneaten feed after feeding.
- Store additives according to the label.
- Work with a qualified aquaculture specialist.
