Poultry Feed Additives: How to Improve Broiler and Layer Performance

Modern poultry production requires consistent feed quality, strong gut function and efficient nutrient use. Poultry feed additives can help broilers, layers and breeders perform more consistently when they are selected for a specific production goal.

Common poultry feed additive categories

Common programs include vitamin and mineral premixes, amino acids, enzymes, acidifiers, probiotics, gut conditioners and mycotoxin binders. Each category addresses a different part of the production system. For example, enzymes can support nutrient availability, while a mycotoxin binder helps manage contamination risk in raw materials.

For broilers

Broiler programs typically focus on early gut development, daily weight gain, feed conversion and litter quality. The additive should be compatible with the starter, grower and finisher formulas and should mix evenly at the recommended inclusion rate.

For layers

Layer programs require attention to egg production, shell quality, calcium metabolism and flock persistence. Consistent vitamin, mineral and gut-health support is especially important when birds face heat stress or changes in feed intake.

• Set a baseline for body weight, FCR, mortality or egg production.
• Track feed intake and flock uniformity.
