Mycotoxin Risk in Feed Storage: Prevention Tips for Hot and Humid Climates
Hot and humid weather can increase the risk of mold growth and mycotoxin formation in grains and finished feed. Prevention starts before ingredients enter the mill and continues through storage and delivery.
Control the storage environment
- Keep bags and bulk ingredients dry and off the floor.
- Reduce condensation and improve ventilation.
- Use stock rotation and inspect older batches first.
- Clean bins, conveyors and transport equipment.
Test and document risk
Sampling should represent the lot being evaluated. Review test results alongside ingredient origin, storage history and animal performance. A single sample may not represent an entire shipment, so a consistent monitoring plan is valuable.
Use a risk-based binder program
A broad-spectrum mycotoxin binder may help manage unavoidable risk, but it should complement good storage and feed-quality practices. Select a product with clear technical documentation and validate it under local conditions.
