Aquaculture Feed Additives: Supporting Shrimp and Fish Production
In shrimp and fish farming, feed efficiency, digestion, water quality and animal resilience are closely connected. Aquaculture feed additives should be selected as part of a complete program that includes biosecurity, stocking density, water management and feed handling.
Common product goals
Farmers may use vitamins, minerals, enzymes, probiotics, organic acids, attractants and functional additives to support growth, feed utilization and stress management. Shrimp and fish have different feeding behaviors and environmental needs, so product application should be species-specific.
Feed and water quality
Overfeeding and poor pellet stability can increase organic load in the pond or tank. Review feeding trays, uneaten feed, dissolved oxygen and water parameters regularly. A good additive cannot compensate for poor feed storage or uncontrolled water quality.
How to evaluate a program
- Track biomass gain and feed conversion.
- Record survival and size uniformity.
- Monitor water quality during the evaluation.
- Keep feed batches and treatment records.
